The six-ingredient nootropic problem
Stacks are designed so that no individual ingredient can be evaluated. That is convenient for the seller and useless for the buyer.
Open any cognitive supplement and you will find six to twelve active ingredients. Ask which one is responsible for an effect and there is no answer available, by design.

Why stacks are built this way
The commercial logic is straightforward. A product with one active ingredient can be compared, copied, and disproven. A product with nine cannot be compared to anything, can cite studies on each ingredient, and remains standing regardless of what any individual trial finds.
There is also a genuine argument for synergy in some cases, and it is a real phenomenon. The problem is that synergy is asserted far more often than it is demonstrated, and demonstrating it requires testing the combination, which is expensive and rarely done.
The dose dilution problem
Fitting nine ingredients into two capsules means each gets a fraction of the space. Frequently the amount present is well below what the cited research used, sometimes by an order of magnitude. The citation remains technically accurate and functionally irrelevant.
Proprietary blends make this invisible, since they disclose a combined weight rather than individual amounts. If a blend's composition is hidden, the product cannot be evaluated at all and the reasonable response is to assume the expensive ingredients are present in small quantities.
Expectation is a large confound here
Cognitive outcomes are measured subjectively far more often than objectively, and subjective mental performance is highly susceptible to expectation. Someone who has spent sixty dollars and read the marketing will usually report feeling sharper.
This is not a criticism of the buyer. It is a feature of how self-assessed cognition works, and it is why properly blinded trials in this area frequently produce much smaller effects than user testimonials.
Running a better personal experiment
Start with one ingredient at a dose matching the studies. Run it for two to four weeks. Use an objective measure if possible: a timed task, a reaction time test, or work output you can actually count. Then stop and see whether anything changes.
Most people who do this discover that sleep, caffeine timing, and exercise account for nearly all the variance in their cognitive performance, which is not what anyone wants to hear.

Is synergy real?
Sometimes, and caffeine with L-theanine is a well-supported example. It is also asserted far more often than demonstrated, and asserting it does not require testing the combination.
Should I avoid stacks entirely?
Not necessarily, but you should know you are buying something unevaluable. If it works for you and you are content with that, that is a legitimate position.
