Training changes mitochondria more than any supplement does
The comparison is rarely made explicitly, which is convenient for a category that would not survive it.
If your goal is mitochondrial health, there is an intervention with decades of human trials, large and reproducible effect sizes, and no cost. It is almost never the comparator in supplement marketing, for obvious reasons.

- It also stimulates mitophagy, meaning it drives both quality control and capacity.
- Resistance training adds muscle mass, which is the largest site of glucose disposal in the body.

What training does at the cellular level
Repeated aerobic work creates energetic stress that signals cells to build more mitochondria and improve the ones present. This has been measured directly in muscle biopsy studies for decades, and the changes in mitochondrial density and enzyme activity are large.
Training also drives mitophagy, clearing damaged organelles as part of the same adaptive cycle. That matters for interpreting supplement research: an intervention aimed at mitophagy is competing with something the body already does vigorously in response to exercise.
Why supplement trials favour untrained populations
If a pathway is already being stimulated hard, adding a compound that stimulates it produces less. That is the most likely reason trials in older or sedentary populations show clearer effects than those in fit young volunteers.
This is not a criticism of the trials. It is a reason to read the population characteristics before assuming a result applies to you.
The practical ordering
Aerobic training for mitochondrial capacity. Resistance training for muscle mass and glucose disposal. Adequate protein and sleep so both adapt. Then, if you want, a compound with a real trial record layered on top of that foundation.
Reversing that order, which is what most people do, means paying for a modest effect on a system you have not stimulated in the first place.

How much aerobic training?
Public health guidance generally lands around 150 minutes of moderate activity weekly as a floor, with additional benefit above that. What is right for you depends on your starting point.
Do antioxidant supplements interfere with adaptation?
For some high-dose antioxidants there is evidence of blunted training adaptation, since the oxidative signal is part of what drives the response. It is an open question for many newer compounds.
